Exploring Programs in Healthcare
Students register for these opportunities online at

  • Nebraska Medical Center Program (meets on Thursdays for 6 weeks)

Start Date: Thursday, January 26, from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm
Location: Nebraska Medical Center, 4350 Dewey Avenue
(locations will change from week to week)
Cost: $30
The Nebraska Medical Center will provide the opportunity for you to explore healthcare careers in multiple healthcare settings. Your learning experience will be shared by like-minded students who have expressed a similar interest. The Explorer Post will meet 6 times throughout the Spring of 2017 with meetings scheduled on Thursdays from 6:00 pm- 7:30 pm. These sessions will introduce you to the vast amount of opportunities in healthcare though interactive activities related to the careers.

  • UNL Durham School Of Architecture and Engineering Program (this program is on the UNO Campus)

Start Date: Wednesday, February 1 - from 6:30 pm-7:30 pm
Location: Peter Kiewit Institute on UNO Campus, 1110 S. 67th Street
Cost: $30
Explorer students are given the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities focused on engineering education including the use of science, technology, and mathematical applications to solve real-life problems related to the engineering, design, and construction of a building. This program will meet on Wednesday evenings for five weeks.

  • UNO Communication and Event Planning Program

Start Date: Tuesday, January 17, from 6:00 pm-7:30pm
Location: Baxter Arena, 2425 South 67th Street
Cost: $30
This program will provide you with event overview and learning tools and materials needed for successfully marketing and implementing the UNO Claussen-Leahy Maverick Run. Broadcasting, social media, graphic design and marketing are some of the key components you will be learning and applying through-out the program. At the end, you will leave with a sense of pride in what you have done to aid in the success of the Claussen-Leahy Maverick Run, an event with over 2,900 participants. This program will have 8 different meetings throughout the spring, the schedule is subject to change.

  • Creighton Pharmacy Program (this event is a 1-day program)

Start Date: Saturday, April 22, from 9:00 am-4:00 pm (lunch included)
Location: Creighton University Campus (directions sent out before event)
Cost: $30
If you are interested in pursuing a career in pharmacy, please join us for our Pharmacy Exploring Program at Creighton University School of Pharmacy and Health Professions. We are excited to offer you the opportunity to explore three separate pharmacy settings including community, ambulatory care, and hospital. The purpose of this program is to introduce high school students to pharmacy as a possible career option through guest speakers, discussions with professional students, and various hands-on learning experiences. Some of the activities that will be covered include compounding medications such as creams and suspensions, assessing blood pressures, counseling on over-the-counter medications, and observing the mixture of intravenous medications. At the end of our session, you will use the skills you have learned to compete against fellow Explorers for the title of Best Pharmacy Explorer. You must be able to commit to the entire 7-hour session in order to enroll for our Pharmacy Exploring Program. Upon completion of our Pharmacy Exploring Program, you will understand the importance of teamwork in the healthcare setting, improve your leadership skills, and develop relationships with other like-minded high school students. Additionally, we encourage you to include our Pharmacy Exploring Program on your resume as you will receive a formal certificate of completion.

Job Opportunities - Summer

  • Recreation Specialists - responsible for the preparation of a daily calendar of events and supervision of all program participants including but not limited to Pappy’s Playgrounder Day Camps, Little Kickers Soccer Camps, Baseball/Softball Rookie Camps.
  • Papio Bay Lifeguards - responsible for maintaining a safe and orderly pool environment, for all basic life guarding skills, and instruction of swim lesson classes.
  • Papio Bay Park Attendants / Ballfield Concession Workers - responsible for greeting patrons and guests, daily maintenance and upkeep of the facility, accepting payment for use of pool and for distributing food and beverages at Papio Bay and the ball field concession stands.
  • SumTur Amphitheater Technical Coordinator - responsible for audio, lighting and projections setup, upkeep, planning, and operation of installed and seasonal audio, lighting and projector systems. Principal mix engineer, lighting director, projectionist and technical director for amphitheater events.
  • SumTur Amphitheater Facility Coordinator - responsible for the supervision of facility operations for events including but not limited to event preparation, parking/shuttle bus operations, ticket sales, customer service and gate security.
  • SumTur Amphitheater Concessions Attendants - responsible for concession sales, ticket sales, and event preparation.
  • SumTur Amphitheater Facility Attendants - responsible for event preparation and event operation.
